How to prioritise your marketing tasks: 3 free and actionable tips

Prioritising marketing is one of the biggest challenges for business owners, whether you do all your marketing yourself or have a team.

A lot of the time, we all know we need to do marketing regularly to stay in the minds of our ideal clients and target audience, but there are so many other things we need to do in our businesses instead.

Marketing requires a lot of creativity and when you’re under a lot of time pressure with conflicting priorities, this creates a less than optimum environment for your creative juices to flow.

Here are some tips I use with my clients and for myself to keep marketing on track and maintain momentum… without spending hours every day stressing about it!

  1. Commit to doing at least one marketing task per day

Consistently showing up and doing great marketing in your business requires you to shift your mindset from seeing marketing as an arduous chore that has to be done, to a key business function that you enjoy doing because it moves your business forward.

A great way to do this is to commit to doing at least one marketing task per day. This doesn’t have to be a big task at all – it could be posting one story on your Instagram account or doing one LinkedIn post. The important thing is that every day you’re taking action to show up in front of your target audience.

These small, incremental actions may not result in quick wins immediately, but they will lead to big gains as they add up over time.

  1. Schedule time to complete tasks in your diary

You wouldn’t book a meeting with a prospective client and then just not show up, would you? So treat your marketing tasks like an appointment you can’t miss. When you block out time for marketing in your diary, it has several benefits:

  • Reminds you to do some marketing in the first place!
  • Protects the time so you can’t book any other meetings at the same time
  • Gives you space and time to be more creative, without other distractions
  1. Do your marketing tasks first thing

This has revolutionised my approach to my own marketing. I love to get the essentials out of the way first thing in the morning so even if I’m not as productive for the rest of the day, I know I’ve achieved my marketing goal. Which, after all, is what ultimately leads to more clients in the future!

Complete your essential marketing tasks early on each day so you don’t get to the end of each day and panic that you haven’t done anything to promote your business.

Bonus tip: If you don’t want something to go out live when you’re posting, use scheduling tools to set your posts/emails/blogs to go out later in the day (or week, or month if you’re really organised!).
