We had the utmost pleasure to have a sit down with Beth and pick her brain…that’s after 30 minutes of talking about everything from her new pup Dougal eating her slipper, to her housemate sneaking out all the marshmallowy bits out of her lucky charms…
Beth is our Performance Marketing Manager. She oversees all of our client accounts, making sure everything is on track to deliver results and aligned with the bigger strategic picture. Oh, and she’s also a copywriting genius!
So, without further ado, let’s get into it!
What do you think is one marketing trend businesses should watch out for?
There’s so much stuff happening in digital marketing at the moment it’s crazy, and also really hard to pick just one. I’d probably say dynamic content. It’s going to divide content from the ChatGPT generated drivel to the stuff that actually converts and plays a key part in scaling businesses.
What’s your go to ‘quick tip’ for creating engaging social media content?
It’s really simple bit of advice: read your content back and ask; “so what?”
They don’t care how “delighted” you are to launch a new product, they only care about how it affects them or how it’ll solve a problem. People don’t read your content just to big up your business, they want to learn, be entertained or feel something, and I think it’s easy when you’re mass producing B2B content to forget about the people reading it and what they want.
What’s one common mistake brands make in their marketing, and how can it be avoided?
Doing things just because “that’s the way we’ve always done it.” That kind of sentence makes marketers cry. Marketing is changing quicker than ever before, we’ve never had so many ways to communicate with our audience, try everything, discover what works and go from there. Keep evolving and changing.
Which marketing tool/resource has been a game-changer for you recently?
I know I’m probably meant to say something about AI, ChatGPT and all that jazz, but I’ve just read a book called Alchemy by Rory Sutherland, it’s a really good mindset shift if you want to stop churning out the regular marketing dross and actually look at your marketing with creativity. (Spoiler: you should want to!)
If you could give one piece of advice to someone just starting in marketing, what would it be?
Ask the “dumb” question, in fact, ask as many questions as you can and keep asking them all the way through your career. I’ve learnt far more by asking real people than I ever did from asking Google. Stay curious, never stop learning. I know that’s 3, but what you gonna do?
Big thanks to Beth for sharing her insights with us! If you want to keep up with her marketing wisdom (and maybe hear more about Dougal’s slipper adventures), be sure to connect with her on LinkedIn here.
