Summer is typically a quieter time for lots of agencies and service-based businesses. Clients and staff are off on their summer holidays and the hot weather slows everything down.
It can be easy to fall into the trap of letting your marketing slip for a few weeks or even months while you’re taking a breather from the previous crazy spring months.
But summer is the perfect time to reflect on your marketing so far this year and plan for the upcoming busy Autumn season to make sure you finish the year on a high.
Here are some tips to help you master your marketing this summer (without having a crazy workload!):
Review your marketing objectives
Remember those marketing objectives you set aaaages ago? Think back to January, February time… well, now you have some time on your hands, why not dig them out again and see how your marketing performance so far this year measures up?
Chances are, you’ll need to tweak your KPIs now you have more data on how your marketing activities have been performing. Or maybe your marketing priorities have changed so your objectives need to reflect that. Either way, it’s a great time to refresh your memory and think about how you’re going to achieve these by the end of the year.
Think about your target audience
Is your target audience still clear? It may even have changed in the last few months if you’ve identified new market opportunities or decided to refine your offer (both of these things are true for me!).
Review your customer personas, either to refresh your memory and make sure you’re speaking directly to them in your content, or to update them if they aren’t relevant any more.
Check your channels
Have you been trying to spread yourself too thin? Or maybe you’ve realised you really can’t put off creating video content anymore. Whatever it is, it’s worth reflecting on your channels over the summer.
You may have seen a great return on one channel and want to concentrate your efforts there for the rest of the year to maximise ROI. Alternatively, you may have decided to try a new channel or separate your content by target audience.
It’s especially important to check your channels if you’ve been tinkering with your marketing objectives and target audience, because these two things can significantly affect where you invest time and money into your marketing.
Master your messaging
Have you launched any new products or services recently? Are your messages all still aligned to your offer? Make sure you take a look at all your digital (and traditional!) channels and how you’re promoting your services/digital products. Sometimes it’s easy to get swept up in creating your wonderful offering and then you forget to talk about it!
Resource check-in
Do you know how much you’ve spent on marketing so far this year? Do you have plans to increase your marketing capacity by hiring new suppliers or recruiting in-house? While you have the head space over summer, it’s worth checking the finances and your general marketing capacity so you can be well-prepared to hit the ground running when the leaves start falling.
